Why Does My Cat Bite My Nose?

I have been a cat parent for years now. During this time, I have learned a lot about cats. But even to this day, I still find out some cat behavior I cannot quite understand. Luckily for you, in this piece I share a behavior that I have, well, mastered and gotten to have a firm understanding of – cat biting. Why does my cat bite my nose?

Signs To Looks Out For

This is a question most cat parents have and constantly wonder about. There could be a number of reasons as to why this is the case. Even as I share some of the reasons, you will have to do your due diligence to know which reasons apply to your cat and at what times.

1. Marking its Territory

Your cuddly feline is probably biting your nose to spread its scent all over you. Cats have scent glans all over their furry bodies, even in their mouths. The thinking is that if you smell like your cat, other cats will stay away. Your cat may seem independent, but it needs to let others know you are claimed. This is the best way it knows to ensure it does not lose you. Talk of being subtly overprotective huh?

In addition to keeping every other cat away, the scent it leaves on you after the ‘love bite’ makes it all the more familiar to you. This increases the bond between you two.

2. Cleaning

You are well aware that cats are super clean animals. They hate dirt and are constantly licking themselves clean. Unlike dog owners, cat owners rarely have to clean their cats in a bathtub. In addition to their clean-freak nature, felines also have a great sense of smell. After you have gobbled a turkey sandwich at lunch, your cat can still smell the turkey and all the sandwich ingredients on you. Yes, even if you wipe your face.

When you get back home, your cat will wait for you to relax on your couch and jump on your shoulders to clean the miniscule crumbs off your chin and nose. This might translate in some slight bites.

3. Scratching an Itch

If you are keen on studying your cat, you might have noticed that every now and then it tends to rub its face against the corners of bookcases, walls and several hard projects.  For your cat, the feeling of having the area under its whiskers rubbed is heavenly. When your cat is gnawing on your nose, it is not because it wants to eat you up or bite you.

On the contrary, it wants to rub the sensitive area at the corners of its mouth. Rather than pushing her away, you should stick your fingers straight to your cat’s face. Let it rub against your fingers and bite them instead. This will be less awkward than biting your nose.

4. It is a Display of Affection

Cats have weird way of showing affection. And different cat breeds have their unique ways depending on their personality. Since your cat cannot possibly hug you, (though I have been trying to train my cat to give me some form of hug and handshake), it settles for nibbling on your nose and giving you a love bite. This is the closest thing to a kiss you will get from your beloved cat.

If she is nibbling on your nose and purring, then it is happy and content.

5. Angry Cat

When your cat gives you the love bite, it should not hurt in the least. As a matter of fact, it should be ticklish and you should be laughing the whole time. However, if your cat has her eyes dilated, her ears down and she is growling while at it, chances are she is angry. Be sure to take safety precautions and put her on the floor. You can even give her a toy to play with and keep her busy. Some of the toys you could consider include: the Iconic Pet Kitty Laser Cat Toy and the Cat Laser Pointer while in this state, you do not want to do anything that will scare or frighten it

What Does it Mean When a Cat Touches Noses with You?

As we have pointed out, there are a host of reasons as to why this might be the case. Touching noses, or as some experts call it, ‘sniffing noses’, is actually a friendly cat behavior. You can consider it as a cat’s way of saying ‘hi’, only that it is more intimate. Being a cat parent, you should get used to this.

Why Do Cats Want To Lick Your Nose?

There are two possibilities here, okay a couple of possibilities, but these two are the most common. Your cat is probably cleaning up tiny particles left on your face during your last meal or kissing you, a sign that it cares for you and feels happy and safe around you.

Training Your Cat To Stop Biting

Now, if the cat bites you are getting are not ticklish but painful, you should consider training your cat to stop. You need to teach your cat that the biting behavior is not acceptable. This sort of training would be much easier if you are dealing with a kitten. But even if it is an adult cat, some training would do some good. Below are some training tips that wll come in handy.

It is important to note that you should never strike your cat as this will only make it afraid of you and break the bond between the two of you.

Every time your cat scratches and bites you hard, you should scream, ‘ouch’ or ‘no’ and just walk away and ignore it. Believe it or not, this is a powerful training tool as cats love playing. Rejecting your cat this will cause it to reconsider its actions.

Learn your cat’s tells. If your cat will try and scratch you after petting it for about 5 minutes, try and cap your petting to 3 minutes instead.

When your cat conducts itself in a behavior you deem acceptable, you should reward and praise it. You could do this by providing it with some tasty treats or even petting it. This will have your cat think of petting as a great and positive thing.

Training Your Cat as a Kitten

The reason your cat is biting you now is because as a kitten you led it to believe that it was okay behavior. As a kitten, the teeth were feeble and the claws were tiny and harmless. Its best efforts as a kitten to harm you were cute. However, as an adult, your cat has more strength to cause you great damage with the least effort. So while it might feel like it is too soon, train your kitten to think of your hand as a personal toy.

Other ways of training your kitten include blowing its face every time she bites your nose. Your cat will make a funny face and will not like it.

Also, try distracting it with a toy. Biting your nose might be a sign that it wants to play. So rather than having it chew on your nose, hand it a toy.

If your kitten proves to be aggressive, full of energy you cannot seem to exhaust with the little time you have in your hands, you should consider getting your cat another cat to play with. Adding to the family might just be the best thing you could do.Iconic Pet Kitty Laser Cat ToyPetLovers Rechargeable Cat Laser Pointer

Bottom Line

Here is the thing. Nose biting is cute. But you have to be careful to ensure that it does not turn into a bloody scene. Cats can also be aggressive, it is in their instincts. Be aware of your cat’s mood and if it needs some training to stop the biting. Hopefully this answers your question, ‘Why does my cat bite my nose?’.
