The question is, just how much fur can one dog have? Let’s turn to the Chow Chow for an answer. The temptation to call yours ‘Teddy’ will be strong. This relentlessly fluffy breed is known as the ‘Wild Dog of China’ and sports many physical characteristics of an arctic dog. Unsurprisingly, it needs quite a lot of grooming (but we reckon it’s worth it). The Chow Chow is known for being aloof and fiercely loyal – a dominant breed that needs a dominant owner.

History

The Chow Chow is thought to be really, really old. Maybe even more than 2,000 years old. There’s no consensus on the definitive history of the Chow Chow, though some believe it’s a distant relative of the wolf-like Spitz. Originally popular in China, the Chow Chow found its way to British shores in the late 18th century and eventually found favour with Queen Victoria.

Opinions differ on the life expectancy of the Chow Chow, with estimates ranging from under 10 years to up to 15 years.

Health problems include hip dysplasia stomach cancer, and eye and ear problems. They can also suffer from respiratory issues related to their short muzzles such as snoring.

Characteristics

The proud puffball

Chow Chows are often described as a ‘one man dog’. This doesn’t necessarily mean they’re bad for families, but careful training will be needed to make sure yours is obedient towards all members of the household.

Country living

As a big dog, this breed isn’t suited to life in small apartments without ample outdoor space. Though they don’t need a ton of exercise and are prone to laziness, yours will need at least one walk a day and will fare best in a large house with a garden.

Grooming

Chow Chows are shedders and their long, explosive coat is high-maintenance on the grooming front. Expect to invest time and money in keeping your pet looking tip-top.

Training

Chow Chows are keen to please (deep down) and aren’t difficult to train with an authoritative approach. Many owners report being able to teach their dog tricks.

Housebreaking

Despite being a wilful breed, Chow Chows are relatively easy to housebreak.
