The Afghan Hound’s looks are beyond compare: this tall breed of dog has a silky million-dollar hairdo that comes in a striking spectrum of colour combinations. It also has a fabulous personality to match and is famous for being sweet, loyal and sensitive, and shy around strangers. Like all VIPs, the Afghan Hound needs a decent amount of TLC to prevent it becoming highly strung.
History
As the name suggests, the Afghan Hound is a sighthound breed that established itself in the mountains of Afghanistan (via Sinai) as a hunter, herder and watchdog. The ancient creature found its way over to British soil in the 20th century. It experienced peak popularity as a glamorous showdog in the 1970s and is still a much-loved breed the world over.
Health
The Afghan Hound has a life expectancy of 12-14 years.
It isn’t known to suffer from any major health issues, but minor health issues can include tail injuries and hip and eye problems.
Characteristics
The showstopper
If you don’t want your dog to be a talking point, this is not the breed for you. Expect to spend a lot of time talking to admirers in the park while your pet frolicks with ears blowing in the wind. You should also expect to spend a lot of time grooming and caring for your Afghan Hound’s coat and keep it shiny and healthy.
Daily exercise
Natural shyness aside, the Afghan Hound is an energetic soul and needs a daily long walk or short sprint to scratch the activity itch. They’re known to change temperament in the blink of an eyelid in a way that’ll keep you laughing from start to finish. This breed is a happy indoor dog, but make sure you give yours plenty of space to relax and play at home.”
Training
Like all other tall, powerful dogs, care is needed around young children and a firm hand is required in training. Some say Afghan Hounds are aloof, moody and generally a bit cat-like in temperament.

Afghan Hounds are averagely easy to housebreak.
