The Dogue de Bordeaux, also known as the French Mastiff or the Bordeaux Bulldog, is a big dog with a huge wrinkly head and a tendency to snore and drool. Doesn’t sound all that charming? You’d be surprised. This breed’s popularity has risen rapidly since its introduction in the UK in the 20th century – it’s more agile than you might think and makes a patient and affectionate addition to the family. A naturally dominant character, the Dogue needs socialising well with children and other animals from an early age.

History

The Dogue de Bordeaux has been around since the Middle Ages. Originating in France (obviously) with a Mastiff and Bulldog in its heritage, this breed found favour as a cattle driver and bodyguard. Dogues were first shown in a French dog show in 1863 and grew in popularity in the UK over the ensuing century.

Health

The lifespan of the Dogue de Bordeaux is on average 10-12 years.

Health problems are relatively rare in this breed, but beware of epilepsy, hip dysplasia, heart problems and skin problems.

Characteristics

The fearless friend

Dogues are patient, loving, loyal and affectionate with its family – with the right training. They can be confrontational with strangers and they’re a very powerful breed. As such, the Dogue de Bordeaux is not recommended for inexperienced dog owners.

Indoorsy with an outdoor twang

Though the Dogue de Bordeaux is a relaxed and relatively inactive indoor dog. However, it needs a decent amount of exercise to flex those powerful limbs and keep it mentally stimulated – aim for a long walk at least once a day.

Training

The Dogue de Bordeaux is not noted for being easy to train. It exhibits the common Mastiff-type traits of strength, power and stubbornness. This breed fares best with an experienced owner and a rigorous approach to obedience training.

Housebreaking

The Dogue de Bordeaux is about averagely difficult to housebreak, but an experienced owner shouldn’t have too much trouble.
