Sausage Dog ahoy! The Dachshund earned its nickname (which it probably wouldn’t feel all too happy about) thanks to its long and slender body matched with short legs. There are three varieties of Dachshund, and they all have slightly different proportions based on coat style: shorthaired, wirehaired, and longhaired. A common feature is their surprisingly deep bark and alert outlook on life.

History

The name ‘Dachshund’ literally means ‘Badger Hound’ in German, which is no coincidence. This dog was originally bred from a Pointer and a Pinscher to help keep the badger population under control, as well as hunting other small prey – a feat made possible by the Dachshund’s sausage-like proportions.

Health

Dachshunds live for roughly 12-14 years.

This breed is prone to spinal disc problems because of its long back. Other issues can include urinary tract problems, heart disease and diabetes, as well as a tendency to become overweight. Weight gain is especially problematic as it puts extra strain on the Dachshund’s already-overburdened spine.

Characteristics

The little troublemaker

Dachshunds aren’t best known for their obedience. This laudable cheeky streek is brilliantly amusing when controlled but less hilarious when poorly managed. Risks include uncontrollable barking and even biting. When adequately socialized, though, the Dachshund is a devoted and affectionate addition to any home.

Small Dog Syndrome

This wee beast is small only in stature. There’s a risk that your feisty Dachshund will end up bossing you about if it isn’t trained to behave well. Establishing the owner-dog dynamic from the outset will prevent this from happening.

Training

The Dachshund’s stubborn nature makes this breed somewhat difficult to train. Recommended only for owners who are able to show strong leadership.

Housebreaking

Dachshunds are slightly more difficult than average to housebreak.
