1. Your cats have emotions too

Our cats are not robots, they are living things. Albeit unable to speak the language we speak, we have an analogous emotional range. They are able to understand us by feeling our emotions. They are able to identify with us when we are feeling sad because they recognize the same emotion occurring to them.

2. Both of you exist in the same social environment

Living with a cat is like living with family, being under the same roof and breathing the same air, there is a high chance that what you are experiencing in a day-to-day basis is also experienced by your cat.

A sad and depressed household is likely to have a more reserved and aloof cat. A tension-filled home may have an agitated cat. Although, cats are likely to walk away if these emotions persist within the household. Cats are known to be attracted to a certain aura and it is certainly not attracted to a despondent one.

3. Almost similar brain structures

Perhaps, the similarity in brain structures is what’s at work here. The limbic system is a cat’s and a human’s common ground, both limbic systems have a fair share of similarities and differences. Before proceeding, let us quickly describe what the limbic system does: it is the portion inside our brains, which connects it to the way we process our thoughts.

Specialized skills for sensing our emotions

From a more external point of view, let us delve in deeper and look closer into our cats’ capabilities and how can cats sense sadness and other emotions!

1. They can identify human cues

Cats are highly observant creatures. They are able to pick up the habits of the people they live with. That is also the reason why they are familiar with certain indicators that mean certain emotions. Perhaps, it took them quite a while to have a better understanding of how these cues work, verbal or non-verbal.

2. They are capable of recognizing human voice

Cats have a highly sensitive sense of smell and sense of hearing. With these skills, they can easily distinguish the voice of their cat parents. This capability allows them to discern who their owners are and instinctively keep themselves close.

3. Have the ability to “communicate” – just not in the way we imagined

A cat’s way for communication is also what we call vocalization. A cat has various ways to vocalize – nine to be exact. A cat’s purr can become calming and has a very soothing and reassuring effect.

4. The connection they have with you

Your cat’s connection with you can be undeniable. I mean, there will be times that they will just be so attached to you, or they would come up to you randomly. And sometimes, these random times are those moments when you are feeling down and sad.

Believe it or not, they do care!

Our cats may sometimes have an uncaring attitude but there are signs that tell you they love you, especially when you are feeling a bit under the weather!

• They would insist on sitting on your lap or sleeping with you
• Your cat would give you a massage or what they refer to as kneading
• They will groom you like their own!
• Sometimes, they will give you presents. They think humans can’t hunt for themselves
• Watch how they come to you as soon as you get home, like welcoming you home – not as enthusiastic as dogs would be, but hey! They do appreciate you!
